Discover La Palma
Green, blue, yellow, black... are some of the colours that visitors will find on La Palma, the most north-westerly of the Canary Islands, in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Isla verde, isla bonita or isla de las estrellas, as La Palma is also called, is a place of outstanding natural beauty which offers visitors a wet landscape in the East, under the influence of the trade winds, and a warmer one in the West, being the túnel de la Cumbre the temperature and weather border between both.
Covering a surface area of 706 square kilometres and with 86,000 citizens living in 14 municipalities, La Palma is home to the Caldera de Taburiente National Park and 19 nature reserves (35% of the surface area) where the El Roque de los Muchachos, at an altitude of 2426 metres above the sea level, is really spectacular due to the small size of the island. Thanks to the excellent natural conditions of this area, nowadays it is considered as one of the best places in the world for the astronomical observation.
A succession of volcanic eruptions gave birth to La Palma, making it emerge from the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean around two million years ago and building a mountain range crisscrossing the island from North to South. Its volcanic origin with volcanoes and lava flows in the south ,some of them still warm, mix happily together with green mountains and much water. In fact, La Palma is the only Canary Island with small streams. Its slopes are covered by lush laurel forests as well as by thick pine woods, while pine trees and brooms hold tight to its rocky summits. Dragon trees, pine forests and the laurel forest of Los Tilos are some of the attractions of the island that persuaded the UNESCO to declare the island as a World Biosphere Reserve, with a network of over a thousand kilometres of well signposted (following European norms) hiking paths.
Being a symbol of tranquillity and harmony, it keeps a lot of unveiled mysteries. It displays important landmarks such as the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. This huge depression, covered by pine trees and criss-crossed by winding ravines, presents visitors with a spectacular and unique landscape. To discover La Palma actually implies to discover a real paradise for adventure lovers, a fascinating holiday destination with lots of possibilities to enjoy nature and sea. Craggy coastline, subtropical forests, weird and wonderful landscapes formed by lava flows, bright forests of pine trees and imposing mountains all give the island an amazing variety of landscapes. Black corals covering arches of lava and its branched system of caves, with a wide variety of species, form the island’s attractive submarine landscape. So varied as its nature is the offer of leisure activities: hiking, mountain biking, riding a horse, paragliding, and so much more… On La Palma everything is possible.
